Finns Abroad by Olavi Koivukangas  There may have been some Finns from Northern Scandinavia sailing with Leif Ericson or with other Norwegian Vikings who explored the New World a thousand years ago. But the documented Finnish presence in America starts with the "New Sweden" colony at the mouth of the Delaware River, in March 1638. The first four European nationalities to settle permanently in the present United States were the English, the Dutch, the Swedes and the Finns. Major contributions made by the early Finnish settlers in America were burn-beating, a new way to build log-cabins, and the art of living at peace with Indians. A descendant of these early Finns was John Morton who signed the USA Declaration of Independence in 1776.

Osa näistä tietokannoista on käytettävissä internetin kautta.

Finns also traveled through the ports of other countries, primarily Göteborg, Malmö, and Stockholm in Sweden, and Trondheim in Norway. The Swedish and Norwegian passenger lists were actually lists kept by the local police of people leaving the country. These lists generally include: Name. Age. Destination. Last residence (the specific place of residence is given about half the time; otherwise, it lists only Finland). Below is a list of the ports and their records available through the Family History Library. http://www.ellisislandrecords.org/ Eminent web site Effective today (April 17 2001), old passenger manifests covering arrivals at Ellis Island from 1892 through 1924 are scheduled to go online. The database was extracted from microfilms of the original paper manifests. The Mormon Church provided the labor for this project which required 8 years and 12,000 volunteers who dealt with 22 million passenger records, trying to read the handwriting of the last century. The web site will bring up page after page, column after column of names, ages and other particulars such as the name of the ship, its departure and arrival dates, the name of the relative's contact in the US and the names of anyone who shared the journey. Passenger Lists 1865-1922 "The National Archives of Canada holds immigration records from 1865 to 1935. The names of immigrants arriving from overseas are recorded in passenger lists. Those arriving from or via the United States are recorded in border entry lists. A series of old nominal indexes exist for the 1925 to 1935 records. In cooperation with the National Archives of Canada, the Pier 21 Society in Halifax, Nova Scotia, has input the information from the passenger list indexes into this database. Also included are border entries for individuals whose surname starts with the letter C." Search Immigration Records (1925-1935)
