from Finland
by the The

Finns
Abroad by Olavi Koivukangas There may have been some
Finns from Northern Scandinavia sailing with Leif Ericson or with other
Norwegian Vikings who explored the New World a thousand years ago. But
the documented Finnish presence in America starts with the "New Sweden"
colony at the mouth of the Delaware River, in March 1638. The first four
European nationalities to settle permanently in the present United States
were the English, the Dutch, the Swedes and the Finns. Major contributions
made by the early Finnish settlers in America were burn-beating, a new
way to build log-cabins, and the art of living at peace with Indians.
A descendant of these early Finns was John Morton who signed the USA Declaration
of Independence in 1776.

The
Emigrant Register
"The Emigrant Register was established in 1989 as a service for genealogists
and the descendants of Finnish emigrants. The foundation of the Register
was a part of the Delaware 350 Anniversary, to commemorate the beginning
of Finnish Emigration to North America. Sources include passport records
(from the year 1890 up to 1950), passenger records of the Finnish Steamship
Company (from the year 1892 up to 1910) and information on Finns deceased
abroad (from 1918 up to 1950). A computerized database of these and many
other sources is currently being compiled. To date over 550,000 entries
have been made. The Register receives a large number of enquiries from
abroad as well as from Finland."

Siirtolaisrekisteri
Vuonna 1989 perustettu siirtolaisrekisteri palvelee sekä sukuhaarojaan
tutkivia suomalaisia sukututkijoita että suomalaisia juuriaan etsiviä
siirtolaisten jälkeläisiä ulkomailla. Tietoja voidaan käyttää
myös tieteelliseen tutkimukseen. Rekisterin päätietokantoja
ovat lääninhallitusten ja maistraattien passiluettelot, Suomen
Höyrylaiva Osakeyhtiön matkustajaluettelot, ulkomailla kuolleita
suomalaisia koskeva ulkoasiainhallinnon aineisto sekä ns. lehti-
ja kirjallisuusviitetietokanta. Niiden lisäksi rekisteriin kuuluu
kymmeniä pienempiä atk-tietokantoja ja muita hakemistoja. Siirtolaisrekisterin
atk-tietokannoissa oli vuoden 2005 alussa yhteensä yli 550 000 tietuetta.
Osa näistä tietokannoista on käytettävissä internetin
kautta. Lisäksi rekisteriin kuuluu sellaisia tietokantoja ja aineistoja,
joita ei ole vielä tallennettu atk:lle.

Finns also traveled through the ports of other countries, primarily
Göteborg, Malmö, and Stockholm in Sweden, and Trondheim in Norway.
The Swedish and Norwegian passenger lists were actually lists kept by
the local police of people leaving the country. These lists generally
include: Name. Age. Destination. Last residence (the specific place of
residence is given about half the time; otherwise, it lists only Finland).
Below is a list of the ports and their records available through the Family

Effective today (April 17 2001), old passenger manifests covering
arrivals at Ellis Island
from 1892 through 1924 are scheduled to go online. The database was extracted
from microfilms of the original paper manifests. The Mormon Church provided
the labor for this project which required 8 years and 12,000 volunteers
who dealt with 22 million passenger records, trying to read the handwriting
of the last century. The web site will bring up page after page, column
after column of names, ages and other particulars such as the name of
the ship, its departure and arrival dates, the name of the relative's
contact in the US and the names of anyone who shared the journey. JP.
