The map shows the amount and geographic distribution of the transoceanic emigration from Finland 1870 - 1914 expressed in parts per thousand (‰). Many of the parishes of Ostrobothnia had an emigration exceeding 1 % of the population. During the period 1870-1914 (65.9 % of the total emigration) 52 % of the emigrants came from Ostrobothnia. For instance Sideby had an emigration of 11.1 ‰ (on an average 30.4 emigrants per year of an average population of 2737); total emigration 1870 - 1914 for Sideby was 1369 persons. At the turn of the century 1800/1900 500 persons from Sideby already lived in America, although the emigration from Sideby had started as late as 1880 with five young men emigrating in order to avoid the Russian military service.
