Hi Sören,

As he was born in 1863 and the average age when emigrating was let's say 20 years it is not probable to find him from the two most often used sources i.e. the database of the Institute of Migration and the Ellis Island archives, unless he made two or more emigrant journeys. I can't find him from either database. It might however be possible to find him in the six volumes of "Migration from the
Russian Empire: Lists of passengers arriving at the port of New York" (edited by Ira Glazier) which also lists many emigrants from Finland. Yesterday I was fortunate to get a message from Sandra Witt at this message board, who kindly provided information of an emigrant in these books, and I will forward this message to her and ask if she can do a lookup for your Johan Fredrik Lillas next time she visits her library.

After writing the note above I did a search at genealogy.com and a Johan Lillas is actually listed in the Ira Glazier books.

I have found a Johan Lillas in Volume 6 (August 1890-June 1891) on page 151.

He is listed as a 26-year-old male laborer ("province" Finland; "village" unknown; "destination" Michigan).

He departed from Liverpool and Queenstown on the Nevada, arriving in New York on February 26, 1891.

According to his date of birth (December 27, 1863), Johan Fredrik Lillas was 27 years of age in February 1891.
