Hi!
According to Ellis Island database my greatgrandfather, August Ernfrid Sandell, came to America in april 1910. He was probably coming to a brother in law in Duluth?
I know that he did not stay for many years so where shall I search for records leaving America?
best wishes from Christel

Hello Christel! Maybe you not got the answer you want, but with more information about the persons it is easier to help you. If August Sandell came back to Finland, maybe you in some passenger lists (passenger records of the Finnish Steamship Company are one example) can find him? Maybe Institute of Migration in Finland can help you?

Hi!
And thank you for your answer Harri!
I have had contakt with the Institute of Migration but they do not have any kind of records about coming back. I have yesterday mailed to FÅA, the steamship company asking for passengerlist. So lets hope.

August Sandell - Houtskär was the right one. I also find out Axel Mattson at Ellis Island database, but I could not read the adress - that was new.

Regards Christel

August Sandell travelled with two "friends" from Houtskär; Henrik Henriksson, 45 years old, and Viktor Skönberg, 18 years old. Henrik had a wife Alina or Mina Henriksson in Kittuisby, Houtskär and Viktor had a father Emil Skönberg, Björkö, Houtskär. All three were sailors. August Sandell had been in USA (Jersey City) already 1903-1904 and Henrik Henriksson had been in USA (Jersey City) 1906-1908. Only Viktor Skönberg had not been in USA. In the pocket August had 20 $, Henrik 25 $ and Viktor 25 $. Henrik Henriksson travelled to his cousin Wilhelm Janson (Jansson), 48 Storm av., Jersey City (same addresses as August Sandell) and Viktor Skönberg travelled to his brother John (Johan) Skönberg, 257 York str. Jersey City. August was 5 feet and 3½ inches high and had brown complexion, blond hair and brown eyes; Henrik was 5 feet and 7 inches high and had light complexion, brown hair and blue eyes and Viktor was 5 feet and 8 inches high and had the rest the same as Henrik.

Anders Myhrman wrote in the book "Finlandssvenskar i Amerika", Helsingfors 1972:

In Jersey City you can find this Swedes from Finland:
Year 1949: Hilda Blomquist, Amanda Carlson, Eli Ekman, Joseph A. Nygård, Arthur Nordberg, Gustav Sundvik, Betty Ström, Frank Wasström and Lina Wasström.
Year 1963: Elsie Bloom, Gunnel Ekstam, Oscar and Betty Storm (from Vasa, Finland), Oswald Rosenberg, Doris Ullman, Gunnel Ekman, Ruth Langseder and Charlotte Törnrooth.
(Other names in Jersey City were John Erickson, Isaac Lall, Henry Carlson, Charles Carlson, John Carlson, Hannes Lindberg, Ralph Törnwall, Alex Törnwall, Victor Holmström, Henry Rönnvall and William Rönnlund.)

If you want to tracing roots in South America / Brazil from Finland you can start to read K-G Olins "Öden och äventyr" from the year 2003. The writer live in Jakobstad, your hometown. In the 293 pages you find much interesting facts about the Swede Finns journey to Misiones iin north Argentina, but it is only one chapter about our Swede Finns there. We also can read about another emigrants, like businessmen, miners, soldiers, seamen, utopias and people who try to find knowledge. The book you find in the library. More information about him you find on his homepage: http://www.multi.fi/~olimex/

Maybe you will find any relatives on this website, try to search after the surname in http://sydaby.eget.net/swe/emigrants.htm

Or try on this homepage:

Finnish Immigrants in Brazil - Brazil, Penedo-RJ Finnish immigrants, who founded the Finnish colony in Penedo-RJ, Brazil by Mikko Laihonen. There you have much links to another homepages about South America.

Hi!
I have read the book written of Olin.It gives some information but in my opinion nothing for a genealogist.
My grandmother had nothing to do with the Penedo colony ( I have had contact with Mrs. Hilden also ). My grandmother worked in Rio for Miss Jenkell.
I have quite good information about my grandmother and her stay in Brazil ( my family has made a book of all her letters written 1928 - 1934 .the book is just for the family ).
my problem is that she was married ( at least we belive so ) with a polish man and my mother was born in that marriage in Sao Mateus do sul / Brazil 1932. i have tried to get information about the marriage.
For some reason my grandmother left her husband ( and never spoked about him ) took my mother with her and came to Finland 1935.
I have tried to trace Polish roots in Brazil but...
I have had contact with arcives, friendly people etc. I have written letters probably nearly hundred but
many Brazil people does not speak English and that makes it even harder.
I have had better luck in Poland.

My grandmother is on a list with emigrants here at Sydabynet.

Thank you once again
Christel
