I am trying to find more information about Alfred Nylund, my great grandfather.
According to the 1900 U.S. Census, he was born in Finland in December 1869.
He came to the U.S. in 1889 and settled in Crystal Falls, Michigan. He worked
as a baker and died in 1922.

Terve Robert E. Nylund!
Alfred Nylund came from Kvelax in Österbotten, north of the town Vasa.
In the book "Hälsning från Amerika", a album published
by "Svensk-finnar", Brooklyn, N.Y., 1905", you can read
about him and others of Swede-Finns (12 % of inhabitants in Crystal Falls
1904). Many chapters in the book were written by John Udell, who (lived
and) wrote that in Crystal Falls, Alfred Nylynd from Kvevlax have been
the owner to the biggest bakery in the town the last five years"
(1899/1900-1904/1905) (In Swedish: "Alfred Nylund från Kvevlax
har varit ägare till största bageriaffären i staden i fem
års tid".)
Information I got from the book: "Finlandssvenskar i Amerika",
written by Anders Myhrman, Helsingfors 1972, the page 189… but the pages
188-192 are about Crystal Falls, organisations, the Swedish Lutheran church
and important persons.

Thank you for the information. This will help in my efforts to trace our
family's ancestry. Alfred's wife was named Hilda. I don't know her maiden
name.
Both Alfred and Hilda are buried in the main cemetery in Crystal Falls,
Michigan. I have seen their graves. All but one of their children are
buried there, too. Their oldest child, Oscar, is buried in Portsmouth,
Ohio, where he died in 1936. He married Josephine Boutin (1901-1943) in
Crystal Falls in 1920. They later moved to Ohio. Their son, Robert Alfred
Nylund, was my father. He was born 19 March 1926, and died 10 September
2002.

Thank you for the additional information. This is very helpful and very
interesting. I found Kvevlax on www.mapquest.com. I also saw photographs
of the village on the unofficial website. I really appreciate your help.

E. Nylund
Alfred Nylund was born in Kvevlax on 12 December 1869. It appears that
he changed his last name from Nygard. He worked as a baker in Finland
before going to the U.S.A. The official Finnish census indicates that
"disappeared," probably because he left Finland to avoid being drafted
into the Russian Army.

Desperately Seeking

I am desperately seeking ANY information on the parents of my grandfather
Daniel Johannes Kara. My grandfather was born in Lapua in approx. 1906,
and was one of 10 children. Daniel migrated to Canada but I don't believe
any of his siblings did. I THINK his father's name was Gabriel Verner Kara.
With so many brothers and sisters, I am certain there must be some living
family members still in the Lapua area. Does anyone have any ideas as to
how to find some information? I am all the way in Australia, so a visit
to the church in Lapua is impossible.
Many Thanks for ANY help or ideas!

Hi Lissa,
There are 10 persons with the surname Kara listed in the phone book for
the Seinäjoki are to which Lapua belongs. At least two of them live
in Lapua. I'll send their phone numbers and addresses to your private
e-mail address.
Regards,
Staffan
